Healthy & Vigorous Forage Stands Project

Project Timeline: April 2013 – March 2016
Objectives
- Identify more effective and economic ways to maintain or improve pasture and hayfield health.
- Demonstrate economic and effective methods of rejuvenating pasture and hayfields that are infiltrated with undesirable species such as invasive plants, willow and aspen.
- Share information about new chemicals, appropriate species selection, value of appropriate clean seed, and other new and/or innovative rejuvenation methods.
Progress
- Sites throughout the South & North Peace focussing on & demonstrating weed control, fertility, species selection and grazing management.
- Development of the Peace Forage Seeding Tool to enable farmers/ranchers, agricultural professionals, reclamation/environmental consultants, foresters and range agrologists to select forage species for their specific situations an management needs. Tool launched May 2014 and Seed Supplier Add-on launched February 2015.
- Showcased at Society of Range Management & PRFA of BC Annual Summer Tour (June 2013).
- Presentation at PRRD Invasive Plant Council Meeting (November 2013).
- Dog Handler’s Clinic, Pouce Coupe, BC (May 2-4, 2014).
- Cowbytes Cattle Nutrition Sessions – North & South Peace (Fall 2013, 2014 & 2015).
- Project showcased at PRFA AGMs (2013, 2014 & 2015).
- Numerous articles in the Forage First newsletter.
