How much can you produce from a small land base?

Join us for an informal evening exploring how crops, livestock and grazing can be combined to make the most of every acre.

This first stop in our August Grazing Series is especially geared toward small-scale producers, new and beginning farmers, homesteaders, and anyone working with a limited land base. Whether you already have livestock, are considering adding a new enterprise, or simply want to see what other producers are trying, come prepared to walk, look and ask questions.

Rather than a formal workshop, we’re keeping this evening intentionally small and conversational, with plenty of opportunity to talk directly with the producer and other participants.

What we’ll explore

Garlic + perennial forage
See how a high-value annual crop is being integrated directly into a perennial forage field that continues to be used for livestock grazing.

Stacking livestock enterprises
We’ll look at how cattle, chickens and occasionally pigs are incorporated into the same land base — and discuss some of the practical opportunities and challenges of managing multiple livestock species.

A barn that moves itself
Take a look at the Rova-Barn, a self-moving mobile chicken barn designed to move poultry across pasture while integrating them into the grazing system.

Cover crops that do more than cover soil
Explore how cover crops can provide grazing and feed value alongside their soil benefits. At this site, grazing the cover crop helped reduce the number of days pigs required grain.

Finding value beyond the main crop
We’ll also talk about opportunities to create additional value from what’s already growing — including ideas such as pickled radish seed pods produced from the cover crop.

What’s happening with pests and insects this year?
We hope to be joined by Keith Uloth, who monitors agricultural pests and insects across the Peace Region, for an informal discussion about what he’s seeing in fields this season.

You don’t need to be an experienced producer to attend.

One of the goals of the August Grazing Series is to create opportunities for producers to learn directly from one another.

We’ll walk the site, look at what’s happening on the ground and leave plenty of time for questions and conversation. Bring your questions, your own experiences and your ideas.
